Bug - Followers get dropped on username change

I used to have a few followers on my old username, but I noticed they are no longer followers w/ the new username.  I'm sure it would be easy to fix on my profile, but I'm guessing the reason why this happened is because followers are associated w/ username instead of user id.

@J_S - Would you mind taking a look when you have a moment?
