I live in the Netherlands and I am also going to Amsterdam some times. It is nice and tiny, a lot of small markets where you can buy a lot of stuff.
Clothes, bread, fish and also a lot of trash of course.
You can always chill in the VondelPark and meet some people there if you are new to Amsterdam.

Nearly everyone thinks that weet is legal, but it isn't. We have coffee shops where you can smoke and doing weet.

Overall it is a nice place without anoying people like Paris, France.

It's alright, pretty crowded, smells like weed everywhere and it is quite expensive. It really depends what you are looking for. Whatever you do, visit the red lights district. We went with my gf and had a pretty good time
