Because you spent real money on the gift card and it should be your property. And if you get banned for low-key bullshit reasons, then it wouldn't be right of them to keep that money. I think that in my particular case the ban would be bullshit because what happened was they suddenly changed the return window for electronics from 4 to 2 weeks without explicitly notifying their customers. This caused me to return 7 items a bit too late. I did contact the customer support beforehand and they consented to the late return, but I still got one of those you-violated-the-TOS-emails so my account is now in danger of being banned.
I can imagine cases like mine in which there's gonna be an unfair ban like that. And I wonder if it's safe for Amazon to just keep the gift card balance considering maybe some of those banned people might file a lawsuit or make bad publicity at some point.
