What is actually required to be a dev (any kind)?

I've gone through a bunch of tutorials, guides and a few books about C++ and Python, and a bit about C, but every single time I just end up seeing stuff like: "Loops, classes, file I/O, functions, recursion", this, that... but nothing that, to me, actually looks like it could be used in developing something. I went to a few programming competitions in highschool, but it was all based around some dumb algorithms which don't really help me with anything. I might be wrong in the long run, but I'm really not sure what any of that has to do with anything so far...
At this point I'm really sceptical about my future, since whatever I end up researching, I don't end up using in any way shape or form. Could someone please explain what is actually required to land a job (just started uni, so not sure what I should mainly focus on, what to research).
Thanks.

This is a really bad place to ask this question, but my recommendation: Go slow, start with something you understand.
Not all is stupid algorithms and math, and "Loops, classes, I/O, functions, and recursion" really are an important thing to know, but you will not learn that from reading a lot, but rather, by coding stuff on your own and finding the best tools for the job. It's slow progress

Ah, apologies for posting in the wrong place. Just ran into this website a few days ago, so I didn't explore everything yet.
Anyways, thanks for the reply. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I still have 3+ years to prepare myself for the real world I guess. Hopefully it will work out.
