Supreme Former Top FBI Official in New York Charged in Money Laundering

A former senior FBI official in New York, Charles F. McGonigal, has been accused of taking money from a Russian oligarch, Oleg V. Deripaska, in order to investigate a rival oligarch and help Deripaska remove himself from US economic sanctions. The charges came in separate indictments unsealed in New York and Washington, D.C., after an investigation by the FBI and federal prosecutors. McGonigal was the special agent in charge of the FBI’s counterintelligence division in New York and retired in 2018. The charges are a serious and rare accusation against a senior FBI official, and demonstrate that the reach of Russia’s oligarchs can extend into the heart of American law enforcement.
