The carders created fake videos and audio files in which celebrities or government officials allegedly recommended quick ways to make money or investment schemes. The cardholders, trusting the “authoritative” individuals, followed the links and entered their personal and financial data.
The stolen money was transferred to the carders’ bank cards, after which it was converted into cryptocurrency for further concealment. During the operation, numerous bank cards were confiscated from the detainees, which are now used as material evidence.
The actions of the detained cybercriminals were qualified under the following articles of the Criminal Code:
Article 168: fraud using information technology. The punishment is from 5 to 8 years in prison.
Article 243: legalization of proceeds from crime. The punishment is from 5 to 10 years in prison.
Article 278-8: violation of legislation in the field of crypto-asset circulation. The punishment is from 3 to 5 years in prison.
