Debian is a community of individuals and today employs more than 1,000 software developers.
The distribution is particularly characterized by stability and the enormous variety of supported platforms,
and offers by far the largest selection of applications available for installation in the repositories.
Almost 60,000 freely available program packages of various categories are available in precompiled form and free of charge.
This is possibly also a reason why many of the later projects use this distribution as a code base.
In any case, Debian is a good recommendation for getting started with Linux ...
