A deterrent to crime or an outdated and morally questionable practice? Advocates argue its deterrent effect, emphasizing the severity of punishment. Opponents question its efficacy, citing inconsistent evidence and raising ethical concerns about irreversible consequences and the potential for wrongful convictions. Where do you stand on this?  [Image: popcorn2.gif]

Why is that? Are there not more effective and morally sound alternatives?

it seems to me that almost nothing is an effective deterrent to crime. whether it be lengthy prison sentences or even the death penalty, im not sure how effective these actually are. crime rates will still go up regardless, for both violent and non-violent crime, and beyond that it could inspire someone else to do it if its publicized (particularly with fraud and non-violent crime). take Joel Ortiz for example, the simmer who was sentenced to 10 years in prison to be made an example of. sure, an example was made of him, but did this stop sim crime at all? did it slow it down one bit? absolutely not. if anything, it only increased and went much more mainstream with people taking greater precautions before engaging in that behavior. you could also make the argument that you'll never truly know solely because its impossible to see what crimes couldve been committed, but i still hold the firm belief that there really isnt any effective deterrent to crime.

Its true that crime rates persist despite these measures, and in some cases, high-profile punishments may even glamorize criminal behavior. The example of Joel Ortiz underscores the idea that severe sentences may not necessarily deter similar crimes and could, in fact, contribute to the criminal activity going underground and becoming more sophisticated. Perhaps focusing on preventative measures, rehabilitation, and addressing root causes could offer more fruitful avenues in curbing crime
